Synopsis
In the early 1940s, the limited range of combat aircraft forced the opposing forces to engage in island-hopping. This was the only way US troops could approach the Japanese home islands. Bloody battles erupted over many islands, reaching their grim peaks during the fighting for Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Once the Americans were close enough, B-29s launched attacks on the Japanese main island.
