Synopsis

Secretary of Defense, promoted to four-star general in 1939. He played a significant role in the modernization of the armed forces. Until the end of the war, he served as Chief of Staff of the Army. He coordinated all Allied operations in Europe and the Pacific during WW II. In 1947, he became U.S. Secretary of State, and in 1950, Secretary of Defense, until he retired from politics in 1951.
