Synopsis

The first new fleet carrier, the ESSEX, entered service on 31 December 1942. The USS YORKTOWN followed on 15 April 1943 as the third ship of this class. After training missions in the Atlantic, the carrier was transferred to the Pacific in early 1943. Decommissioned: 30 June 1970 - museum ship since 1975.
